Lock is on berm side of canal against the hill to the west and is usually full of water except in the winter when the Erie Barge Canal above Lock E2 is drained.

Note 1862 date stone. Lock was built after the Waterford side cut to prevent boats entering the river and bypassing the Watervliet Weigh Lock on the Erie Canal. It remained in service until the abolition of tolls in the 1880s.
