Old Guard Lock
Joliet, IL
3/24/1899
This historic photo shows the removal of the guard lock at Joliet. The view is northward from the Jefferson Street Bridge towards the Cass Street Bridge. The guard lock protected the canal southward from river flooding. The canal north of here to Lock 5 was originally in a pool of the river formed by a dam to the right at Jefferson Street. As part of the changes for the Sanitary and Ship Canal, a wall was built between the canal and the Desplaines River to the right to a point north of Lock 5, eliminating the need for this guard lock.
