The ladder is about where the lower gate quoin would have been with the gate pocket replaced by the abutment concrete to right.

This is a view of the upstream gates of Lock 5 during the rebuild. The upper gates are partially open and the horizontally pivoted wickets are clearly visible  at the bottom.

This is a view of the lock looking north with the Jackson Street bridge crossing just below. Note the lightness of the bridge.
To the right of the lock is construction of a flumeway to carry water from above the lock to water the canal to the south all the way to Lock 6.
