Note that instead of the original masonry lock, this is a wood crib lock. It would have become necessary when pumps were installed to increase the flow of polluted water south from the Chicago River to the Illinois.

This is a sketch of the original North Summit lock at Bridgeport where the canal enters the South Chicago River. It was removed in 1871. Note that this was a masonry lock.
