This is the first of three locks at Creek Locks that raised the canal out of the slack water of the Rondout Creek. The stop plank groove noted above would have been needed to hold back the waters of the pool when it was necessary to dewater the lock for repairs. The current pool level is below the operating level, but high enough to submerge the lock foundations.

This lock is also higher at the lower end to support a bridge across the lock entrance to carry the towpath between the river side of the canal above the lock and the edge of the pool below. The canal is independent of natural streams beyond this point.
