Delaware Canal
@ US 1

Four piers of the Route US 1 bridge are in the water of the canal. As originally
built, the culvert, just to the left of the visible pier was the only connection
to the canal southward and the fill at the bridges west abutment blocked the
canal. A few years ago, the canal on the left was built by the U.S. Army to
reconnect the canal. The original version was narrower than the current channel.
Sheet pile with tie backs would allow for further widening. This is an example
of poor thinking along the southern end of the canal.
